PA Conservation Explorer

March 21, 2016

DCNR Launches New PA Conservation Explorer

Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn announced that the department and its partners have launched PA Conservation Explorer to assist businesses, local governments and citizens with conservation planning, and improve the process for environmental reviews for threatened and endangered species that are required during permitting for construction and other activities.

“A government that works efficiently makes it easier to evaluate the impact that projects will have on our threatened and endangered species so that they can be avoided through the planning and permitting processes,” Dunn said. “For the first time, species habitat information will be available online, and applicants can submit projects electronically, replacing a cumbersome process that required paper submissions to four different agencies.”

PA Conservation Explorer replaces the Pennsylvania Natural Diversity Index Environmental Review Tool (PNDI).

The new tool provides conservation information on biological diversity, protected lands, streams and other natural resources for planning purposes. It also allows users to screen a project area for potential impacts to threatened, endangered, and special concern species.

The tool does not list specific locations for species, but instead shows the species habitat.

There is a $40 convenience charge per project to use the PA Conservation Explorer. Users without access to a computer or who do not wish to use the convenience option may submit their project for review directly to each of the four jurisdictional agencies.

Jurisdictional agencies are: DCNR, plants; Pennsylvania Game Commission, birds and mammals; Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, fish, reptiles and amphibians; and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, federally-listed species.

To learn more about Pennsylvania’s diversity of species and natural heritage visit www.naturalheritage.state.pa.us.

PA Conservation Explorer: PA’s New Tool for Conservation Planning and PNDI Environmental Review

DCNR is developing a new tool to replace the current PNDI ER Tool. The new tool, called the PA Conservation Explorer, will include both conservation planning and PNDI environmental review components. It will provide improved access to visible conservation information, leading to better project planning and fewer impacts on T&E species and resources of special concern.

Although most parts of the tool will be free of charge, DCNR intends to recover some of the costs of developing and managing the new tool by charging a $40 fee per PNDI Receipt. The fee policy was recently published in the Pennsylvania Bulletin. To see the full notice in the PA Bulletin, click here. The policy is open for public comment until October 17, 2015.

iMapInvasive Pennsylvania

January 28, 2015

New Homepage for Pennsylvania iMapInvasives

PNHP has developed new online resources for Pennsylvania’s iMapInvasives database. The new webpages reside on the PNHP website and provide information about invasive species including educational resources, a gallery of PA invaders, current news, and instructions on utilizing the iMapInvasives database. Five other iMapInvasives states currently have their own homepages as well including New York, Florida, Maine, Oregon, and Vermont. Pennsylvania is now the newest state to offer this type of unique resource to their iMapInvasives users.

For anyone not familiar with iMapInvasives, this database serves as an on-line, GIS-based data management system to assist citizen scientists and natural resource managers working to protect natural resources from the threat of invasive species. By utilizing iMap, users can know where invasive species are located, management efforts can be recorded and tracked, and data can be shared with others, all in one place and all accessible online.

If you have ideas for additions to the PA iMapInvasives homepage, please contact a member of the administrative staff by sending an email to

imapinvasive email address

Your comments and feedback are welcome.

Cameron CNHI Complete

PNHP is pleased to announce the completion of the Cameron County Natural Heritage Inventory, the 66th inventory of its kind. This project began in 2008, with fieldwork wrapping up in 2011. Sixty-one extant element occurrences have formed the basis for twenty-nine Natural Heritage Areas (NHAs). Cameron County is part of the "big woods" section of Pennsylvania and is the third least densely populated county in the Commonwealth. Much of the County is owned by DCNR and PGC, with most of the remaining land in large parcels under the ownership of timber management organizations. The southern portion of the county is famous for the reestablished elk population, which along with hunting and fishing opportunities supports a healthy eco-tourism industry. Cameron County serves as extremely important habitat for a number of big woods' species, including the timber rattlesnake (Crotalus horridus) and northern water shrew (Sorex palustris albibarbis), as well as several species considered "globally vulnerable" to extinction, such as the mountain earthsnake (Virginia pulchra) and northern barrens tiger beetle (Cicindela patruela). While development pressure is relatively low in Cameron County, the region faces challenges relating to the recent boom in shale gas development. The Cameron County Natural Heritage Inventory is complete and available to download here.

Delaware 2011 County Natural Heritage Inventory Update

The Delaware County Natural Heritage Inventory Update has been completed. This project was an update to the original Delaware CNHI of 1992. The project was funded by DCNR's Wild Resource Conservation Fund and additional funding provided by the County. Despite several centuries of habitat modification by agriculture and development, Delaware County still retains essential fragments of distinctive habitats that support species of concern. Delaware County has 215 individual occurrences of species tracked by PNHP, including those listed as rare, threatened and endangered. It falls 19th out of the Commonwealth's 67 counties for the number of species of concern. Two of these, bog turtle and serpentine aster, are considered globally rare. The county also contains much of the small part of the state that falls within the Atlantic Coastal Plain physiographic province and the tidally influenced portion of the Delaware River. Download a copy of the Delaware report here.
